In December, in two try-outs we put the finishing touches on the concept. It was very exciting if all the different puzzle parts would form a whole. The portal, the accompanying booklet, the AR-tags, the professor and the mentors did work out separately, but how would they function together with the children?
The mentors from the ‘Stichting Van en Voor Jongeren’ fortunately all have much experience in guiding the target group from Kanaleneiland. They knew how to motivate the children and gave clear feedback that we will use for the premieres at the schools in January. The professor told the story of Aelius and his inventions in a very imaginative way and improvised when it was necessary, which was well suited to the quite busy children. His feedback is very useful for the presentations in January as well.
The technical side of the concept showed a number of teething problems. A number of AR-tags and the accompanying sound was not optimally working. We are busy to correct the deficiencies and are preparing a plan B. We also learned to spread the AR-tags only very shortly before the quest, because the kids find it fun to move the tags. The projection into the time portal and the portal itself worked almost flawlessly. We have tested whether it is better to give every child an accompanying booklet for the treasure hunt or one book for the whole group. The second proved to work better, because the kids get a better group feeling.
For the first try-outs it went very well, but there is still a lot to prepare for the performances in January.
Merry Christmas everyone and till January with new exciting stories!
We have a lot of stuff to finish so we can test our project and are really excited, because now everything is coming together.
The films of Aelius are almost done and the sounddesigners are putting a nice final touch on it. The time portal is painted and arrived at our working area in Hilversum, so now all we have to do (and well, that’s quite a lot) is make the elektronic stuff work on the timeportal. The markers are working and the 3D-images are looking good!
We have found two really professor-like gentlemen willing to present the timeportal to the class, and we have been working on the script for the professors. This week, we will be rehearsing with the professors so they know what to do.
The children will get a work-book when they go into Kanaleneiland to search for the different objects. When they find the objects and extract them from the ground onto their laptop, Aelius will give them some historical information. With this work-book, we hope to make history come alive and also be remembered.
Last but not least, the presents for the children are finished! After the lesson, the children will receive a button with a picture of Aelius. This way, we hope the children won’t forget this history lesson too soon.
